career in vascular surgery

This section mainly caters to the registrars as well as nurses/house officers/medical students interested in pursuing a career in vascular surgery.
Becoming a Vascular Surgeon
Surgeon Training and education of future vascular surgeons is by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in conjunction with The Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery (ANZSVS).
It is a five year Surgical Education and Training (SET) programme with year-long placements throughout both New Zealand and Australia.
Aspiring future trainees are required to do some time as non-training vascular registrars (as well as registrars in other specialties) to gain experience prior to applying for SET.
Many trainees will choose to embark on a fellowship year at the end of the formal SET programme prior to working as a vascular surgeon.
Further information on selection regulations (including minimum requirements), CV scoring guidelines, key dates and other important information can be found directly on the ANZSVS website here.
VSAoNZ Conference Travel Grants
The Vascular Society of Aotearoa New Zealand will hold its Annual Conference in Dunedin from 27 February – 1 March 2026. There are travel grants available to nurses, registrars and sonographers, if you wish to apply please email sarah.jonson@obex.co.nz

Become a Vascular Sonographer
To become a vascular sonographer in New Zealand, you must first complete a bachelor’s degree in a related health science or medical imaging field, then complete the University of Auckland’s Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Ultrasound). While there isn’t a specific vascular-focused programme yet, this general ultrasound diploma will make you eligible for registration with the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB). Securing an approved clinical training position is a mandatory step for admission into the postgraduate programme.
